Equipa especializada e orientada para soluções Tailor Made

ENG

Founded in 2007, Whitestar Asset Solutions, owned by Arrow Global, is the Portugal reference on the recovery and management of credit and real estate portfolios, based on a work culture directed by performance. The Business Portugal Magazine spoke with Isabel Teixeira, Servicing Director of the company.

Whitestar Asset Solutions – “One Stop Shop” on the management of credit and real estate portfolios
Whitestar Asset Solutions is the largest Servicer in Portugal which, since 2015, belongs to the UK shareholder Arrow Gobal Group. They have 8 billion euros in assets under management – bad loans and real estate. They have two offices in Portugal, Oeiras and Porto, and around 600 employees. They guarantee a range of related services, such as consulting, real estate management, securitization and structuring, business analytics, among others.
In conversation, Isabel Teixeira explains what is the core business of the company, “we do credit recovery, always privileging the friendly aspect, not only for social reasons, but also for costs. The judicial aspect, besides being more expensive, is also more aggressive”.
Whitestar Asset Solutions follows the process from the beginning to the end, “from the moment a credit is offered for sale to the time that it is converted into cash and deposited in the account”, always followed by specialized in-house teams.
They consider the investment of the British company, Arrow Global, very important, “not only in terms of capital injection, but also in the culture of customer-debtor treatment, we are probably the only Servicer that has a structured Customer Journey project”, where “Our goal is to make money, but not at any cost, we have a project that assumes care for vulnerable customers, we try our best to have payment agreements that are sustainable”, concludes.

Specialized team focused on Tailor Made solutions
Guided by a multidisciplinary team, from “lawyers, managers, appraisers, economists, among other functions”, almost no outsourcing occurs, the company stands out for the internal service, that makes it special and specialized.
A larger Portugal Service tries to segment the service to the maximum, “not only to ensure special management for the investor, but also for the client’s own specialized treatment”, adapting a solution for the debtor. In this process, they often keep the properties, “either through judicial process, or because we have the possibility to return them”.
The company also has the real estate segment, in which, in partnership with about 400 real estate agencies nationwide, they try to offer a tailor made solution for the investor client, “in places where large agencies are no longer convenient, we contact small real estate”, shoots the interviewee.

A work culture focused on the human side
In Whitestar Asset Solutions company “there is a work culture, but above all, there is a goal culture”. Work by itself is not the key to success. In the company, we are based on the “Lean” Program – which aims to achieve maximum efficiency, “employees are asked to suggest ways in which their work will be more productive, so as to eliminate waste, for example, by suppressing certain tasks that may be automated and choosing to make others with added value”.
They consider themselves a happy and resilient company, where high performance is a part of the ADN. All the employees are oriented towards their role, knowing what goal they need to achieve, focusing on overcoming themselves and, in turn, on team challenges, “so in the end, everyone wins,” she reiterates.

Innovation – from education to financial literacy
Whitestar Asset Solutions, in conjunction with Junior Achievement Portugal, has been developing volunteer actions dedicated to financial literacy. They recently held an Innovation Challenge with about 100 young people aged 15-19, “together with 25 mentors, they were organized into groups to find the best solution to reach our debtor. We evaluate the best ideas and even consider some, because they are an outside the box vision for the business”. Isabel Teixeira add, “We prevent debt distress, so financial literacy is really important, considering that one of the main causes is the lack of debt, so we want to follow Arrow Global’s mission – Building Better Financial Futures”.

“Overseas Direct Investment” Award Winners at DIT Business Awards
Whitestar Asset Solutions received the “Overseas Direct Investment” award by the Department for International Trade in Portugal. The Servicing Director says that this is the fourth award they received in 2019 and that “they do not trivialize awards”, it is “very important” to be recognized for their cross-border work.
In this context, Isabel Teixeira, once again, highlights the role of their single shareholder Arrow Global, “our 100 per cent shareholder”, being proud to “integrate a group of more than 2.500 employees, present in 5 geographies and listed on the London Stock Exchange”. Presenting themselves on the market as “the star of the Arrow group” and highlighting the investment that one of the leading European economic groups makes in the company, “all the rules that the shareholder has to comply with in the UK are adapted and followed by our company here”.

The future
According to Isabel Teixeira, the balance of recent years could not be more positive. In 2018 they were “positively obliged” by debtors to ask for the compliment book for the quality treatment. Every month they receive letters and emails of thanks, considering how they managed the customer processes. The goal is to continue to grow at the business level, always supported by the efficiency policy they have already instituted in the company.
A favorable future is ahead, “we have a very significant portfolio pipeline, so the goal is to ‘grab’ the business”. Finally, she would like to demystify the negative image that exists of the NPL (Non-performing Loans), concluding: “we are necessary”. Whitestar Asset Solutions argues that must exist a regulation to separate companies that are guided by good conducts, as is the case, from those that don’t follow that rules.
